How to Burn a Beeswax Candle Properly

A beautiful candle deserves a beautiful burn.

A few simple habits can help your beeswax candle burn more evenly, maintain a steadier flame, and stay beautiful throughout its life.

1. Trim the Wick Before Lighting

Before each burn, check the wick.

If it has become excessively long or developed a large carbon buildup at the tip, carefully trim it.

A properly maintained wick helps control the flame and can reduce unnecessary smoking or soot.

2. Give the Candle Time

The first burn is especially important for many candle shapes.

Allowing the candle to burn long enough for an appropriate melt pool to develop can encourage more even burning later.

Extinguishing a wide candle after only a few minutes repeatedly may encourage the center to burn downward while leaving a wall of unmelted wax around the edge.

3. Keep It Away from Drafts

Avoid placing a burning candle directly beside:

• Open windows

• Air-conditioning vents

• Fans

• Frequently opened doors

Moving air can push the flame to one side and lead to uneven melting, flickering, or dripping.

4. Keep the Candle on a Stable Surface

Always place candles on a level, stable, heat-resistant surface.

5. Watch the Flame

A healthy flame should generally appear controlled and relatively steady.

If the flame becomes unusually large, begins smoking heavily, or the wick develops significant carbon buildup, extinguish the candle safely and allow it to cool before adjusting the wick.

6. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended

Keep burning candles away from children, pets, curtains, paper, dried flowers, and other flammable materials.
