Candle Care
Why Should You Trim a Candle Wick?
Trimming your candle wick takes only a few seconds, but it can help create a steadier flame, reduce soot, and encourage a cleaner, more controlled burn.
One of the simplest candle-care habits is also one of the easiest to overlook:
Check the wick before you light the candle.
As a candle burns, the exposed wick can become longer and may develop a dark carbon buildup at its tip. If that buildup becomes excessive, it can affect the next burn.
What Happens When a Wick Is Too Long?
An overly long wick can feed more melted wax to the flame than necessary.
Depending on the candle, this may contribute to:
An unusually large flame
More noticeable flickering
Smoke or soot
Faster wax consumption
Carbon buildup at the wick tip
Uneven burning
Trimming helps keep the flame more controlled.
How Short Should the Wick Be?
There is no single perfect measurement for every candle because wick type, candle diameter, and design can vary.
As a general candle-care practice, many candles perform well when the wick is kept around 5–6 mm (approximately 1/4 inch) before lighting.
Always follow the care instructions provided for the specific candle.
Don't Trim Too Much
A wick can also be too short.
If it is cut excessively close to the wax, the flame may struggle to remain lit or may become overwhelmed by melted wax.
The goal is not to make the wick as short as possible.
The goal is simply to remove excessive length and carbon buildup.
A Ten-Second Ritual
Before lighting your candle:
Look at the wick.
Remove loose carbon buildup.
Trim it if necessary.
Then light it.
It takes only a few seconds, but it can make a meaningful difference to the way your candle burns.
Sometimes good candle care really is that simple.
